The two leaders of far-right political group Britain First have been charged with aggravated harassment over an inflammatory gang rape case.

Paul Golding, 35, and Jayda Fransen, 31, who are the leader and co-leader of the anti-immigrant group, were charged on Wednesday afternoon at a police station in Kent.

A statement from Kent Police said the two had been charged with several counts of causing religiously aggravated harassment in Thanet and Canterbury.

It said the alleged harassment was caused by the distribution of leaflets and posting videos about a rape trial, in which four people were convicted of gang-raping a drunk 16-year-old girl at a pizza shop.

Shershah Muslimyar, Rafiullah Hamidy, and Tamin Rahmani of Ramsgate, Kent, were jailed for 14 years each for the crime, the BBC reported earlier this month.

A fourth perpetrator, an unnamed 17-year-old boy, was jailed for seven years.

According to the BBC, the judge sentencing the men said their victim asked for help getting home, but was instead subjected to an "appalling and repeated gang rape ."

Before being charged, Golding and Fransen recorded a video of themselves outside the police station. They have been bailed ahead of an appearance at Medway Magistrates' Court on 17 October.
